Options apply when you start a new puzzle.

Choose the grid size, search directions, word length, British or American English and whether you want clues. Every puzzle tells you how many target words there are to find.

  1. Reading levels use simpler original clues, smaller word sets and preset boards. First words runs across and down; Growing reader adds downward diagonals; Confident reader uses all directions. Bonuses use the same reading pack. Classic keeps the full game and custom settings.
  2. Choose a fixed word length or a minimum–maximum range. All answers have at least three letters: two-letter words never count.
  3. Clues on: solve the definitions, then find their answers. Clues off: explore using only the word count and length rule. No answer list is shown in either mode.
  4. Press Start a new puzzle to apply your options; this replaces your current puzzle. The maximum length is limited by your grid. Nine-letter words need the 10 × 10 grid.
  5. Drag in a straight line horizontally, vertically or diagonally. In Classic, choose the four-way cross for across and down, or the eight-way star to include diagonals. Words can run backwards and overlap. Reading levels use their own direction presets. You can also tap the first and last letters, or use Tab and Enter.
  6. Each distinct target counts once. Other valid words in your selected English dictionary matching your length rule count as bonus discoveries. Bonuses never increase the target count or delay completion.
  7. Your puzzle, discoveries, hints and options save automatically in this browser on this device. Return or refresh to continue. Starting a new puzzle replaces the saved one.
  8. Hints are optional. With clues off, you can request a definition of an unfound word. Further help reveals its length, then its first letter; fixed-length puzzles skip the length hint.

Targets use a curated vocabulary with original definition clues. Bonus discoveries use the selected British or American English word list, filtered to 3–9 letters. Proper names, abbreviations and punctuation are excluded. This is not an Oxford dictionary; some real words may still be missing.

iPhone or iPad
  1. Open puzzlewellgames.com/wordwell/ in Safari.
  2. Tap Share (the square with an upward arrow).
  3. Choose Add to Home Screen. Scroll through the actions if needed.
  4. Leave Open as Web App on if it appears, then tap Add.
  5. Open the new WordWell icon. Stay online until it says Ready for offline play.
Android
  1. Open WordWell in Chrome.
  2. Tap the ⋮ menu → Add to Home screen → Install, or use Install WordWell above when available. Menu wording can vary.
  3. Open its Home Screen icon while online and wait for Ready for offline play.
Computer

In Chrome or Edge, use the browser’s Install app control. In Safari on a supported Mac, choose File → Add to Dock. Open the installed app online once to prepare offline play.

Updates & offline play

Reopening WordWell online checks for updates. When A new WordWell is ready appears, tap Save & refresh. Your current puzzle is saved and the app reloads.

If it still shows the old version, fully close it from the app switcher and reopen it online. You don’t need to reinstall.

Once it says Ready for offline play, you can start puzzles, use hints and save progress without internet. Saves belong to this browser or installed app and may not transfer when installing. Clearing app data removes them.
